National Night Out Is An Annual Gathering for Neighbors on East Howell Avenue in Del Ray
July 16th, 2008 Categories: Del Ray
On the eve of a two week trip to Slovakia, neighbor Lisa Frye was walking the neighborhood to hand out “Save the Date” notices for Tuesday, August 5 - the East Howell Avenue block party that is part of the nation wide annual “National Night Out. ”
And the day after they returned - the neighborhood list serv got a reminder email. That’s how much everyone on our block in Del Ray looks forward to this evening of casual, old-fashioned, pot luck, get together fun.
Technically - and because neighbor Linda Wilkins submits all the right paperwork to get the street closed - the party is for the 400 block of East Howell but neighboring residents have been known to cross the barricades just to get to the fried fish!
Not to worry, we welcome all comers!
Now in its 25th year, National Night Out is a unique neighborhood event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) that is designed to:
- Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness
- Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs
- Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and
- Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
There will be food and drinks, games for the kids, and visits from the Alexandria Police motorcycle patrol, the horseback unit, the fire department, Mayor Bill Euille (a Del Ray resident) and other elected officials.
Does your neighborhood celebrate National Night Out? If not, come join us, we’d love to see you.
If you want to know more about Del Ray as place to live and work, give me a call at 703.927.4554 and we’ll have a cup of coffee.

P.S. Our block has a chili cook off too but you’ll have to wait till October . . .

Boy do those hot dogs look good! Sounds like a great gathering. I’d love to see the horseback unit of the Alexandria police.

Hi Susie,
I’ll be sure and get pictures of the horseback unit on the day of the party - they are certainly a favorite of all the neighborhood kids.
Thanks for stopping by,
Michael
