A Day in the Virginia Countryside - Part One
October 6th, 2008 Categories: Things to Do
Perfect October temperatures made this a weekend for doing and exploring. After taking in Arts on the Avenue on Saturday in Del Ray, we ventured down towards Orange, VA on Sunday for a day in the Virginia countryside. It was a lot to see and do so we’ve decided to divide our adventures into three separate posts. And now for part one:
Fall Fiber Festival
The 21st Annual Fall Fiber Festival “proposes to present a wholesome, fun event for the entire family and at the same time show the beauty of a little known industry . . . by presenting an educational display of sheep and fiber products, the public can develop their interest and skills in these areas . . . .”
Held on the outlying grounds of James Madison’s Montpelier since 1990, the festival is small, homey, easy to navigate and on a perfect fall day, an absolute delight. Just outside of Orange, VA on Rt. 20, it’s an easy two hour drive from Northern Virginia.
The animal exhibits, a hit with young and old, feature sheep, goats, alpacas and llama’s - all sources of fiber. In addition there are workshop tents (sheep to shawl), sheep shearing demonstrations and vendors selling an endless rainbow of material for knitters and weavers alike.

Putting it to work
Food and drink are available on the grounds. Mark your 2009 calendar for October 3 & 4, you’ll be glad you did.

Hello Michael,
Looks like this was a fun event, and great idea to separate the posts. I like them short, sweet and to the point. The weather here in Chattanooga is beautiful and I hope to go exploring and blog on the city. Keep up the great work. David
David,
One of the things we love about living in this area is the easy (2hrs. or less) access to the beach, the mountains, horse country, wine vineyards, etc. It makes the frenetic Monday-Friday schedule bearable.
Thanks for stopping by, I’ll look forward to what you have to tell us about Chattanooga.
