Living in Northern Virginia – It’s Complicated!

Living in Northern Virginia is not difficult or unpleasant in the least but it can be complicated.  Why?  Well, it really has to do with how the Commonwealth of Virginia organizes its legal jurisdictions.

For instance, we have:

There are counties, cities and towns.  Incorporated towns have their own government, as does each city and county but, towns are located inside a county and cities are not.

Some of the counties are larger, more densely populated and more urban than many of the cities. And then a city like Falls Church City may not really be any bigger than a small town like Vienna in Fairfax County.

School systems are another issue.  Falls Church City has it’s own highly regarded school district but just because you live in Falls Church it does not make you eligible for the FCC school system.

And finally, there are large parts of Fairfax County that have an Alexandria postal address like Kingstowne, Hollin Hills, Waynewood, and neighborhoods bordering the George Washington Parkway.

Once you’ve lived here for awhile you’ll get perfectly used to the nomenclature but if you’re just moving here and looking for a place to buy or rent it may seem overwhelming.

Second, if you want to do some research on your own – maybe from across the country or even across the ocean – make sure you know the proper locator designations when looking in the MLS (Multiple Listing Service):

AR = Arlington County

AX = Alexandria City

FA = Falls Church City

FC = Fairfax City

FX = Fairfax County

This should at least get you started in the right direction.  And when you’re ready, I’ll be here waiting for you.
