The Mosby – A Luxury Condominium in Alexandria’s Del Ray Neighborhood Part Three
November 15th, 2010 Categories: Alexandria, Del Ray, Real Estate News
Back in August we introduced you to The Mosby, a luxury condominium in Alexandria’s popular Del Ray neighborhood.

In fact, the Mosby sits right on Mt. Vernon Avenue in the very heart of Del Ray.
Like most things construction, developer Brian Thomas lost a few weeks because of errors in shipping, coordinating workmen and, well, there was a new baby too!
All that is behind him now and not only is the Mosby officially on the market, the first unit has been sold. The penthouse is waiting for a few finishing touches but the units on the bottom are open and available for viewing.
Watching the Mosby turn from a dream into a reality has been a real treat for us. The finished product is exactly what Brian promised – a unique quality development – that is an absolute asset for Del Ray.
From the original hardwood floors to the refinished claw foot tubs to high end appliances, the Mosby is urban living at its best. Interested in making the Mosby your home? Give me a call at 703.927.4554 and let’s make it happen.

Alexandria Author Explores Gentrification of Del Ray
October 30th, 2010 Categories: Alexandria, Del Ray, Things to Do
Andrew Wingfield, an Alexandria resident and writing teacher at George Mason University, explores the gentrification of Del Ray in a new book of short stories, RIGHT OF WAY.

Washington Writers Publishing House
Wingfield has lived in Del Ray since 2000 when he and his wife, artist Tania Karpowitz, undertook the renovation of a building that once housed a corner store.
His immersion in the neighborhood, as homeowner, husband, father, fueled his interest in the subtle and not so subtle changes that were taking place in Del Ray.
He talks about those observations in a Wall Street Journal essay and how they became the genesis of “Goodbye,” the last story in the collection.
Alan Cheuse, talking about RIGHT OF WAY on National Public Radio, noted “Life, like most of the neighborhoods we inhabit, is constantly in transition, a state of being that Andrew Wingfield captures beautifully in his stories about a neighborhood shifting and slouching toward the future.”

Sculpture at Del Ray Central Apartments in Alexandria, VA
October 27th, 2010 Categories: Arlandria, Del Ray
This concrete and marble sculpture, “Three Eggs in Space” stands at the intersection of Mt. Vernon and Commonwealth, on the site of the Del Ray Central Apartments.

Commissioned as public art, the sculpture by artist Karen Bailey, represents motherhood. The large concrete oval is the mother, the smaller marble egg is the baby.

An important transition area for the north end of Del Ray into Arlandria, this sculpture is sure to become a geographic landmark as development of the Calvert moves forward.

There’s really not much to say. It was a great day, the crowd was the biggest ever – well over 5,000 folks – and everyone was on their best behavior.
A ferret won the best dressed pet contest, “Alice in Wonderful Del Ray” was a show stopper, nobody got lost and I’ve never grilled as many hot dogs in my life!
Now I’ll let the pictures tell you the rest . . .
If you happen to see a photo you like, drop us a line or call 703.927.4554 and we’ll send you a copy.
And if you want to buy a house I can help you with that too!

Del Ray Chili Cook Off is a Raging Sucess
October 24th, 2010 Categories: Del Ray
About 150 folks gathered yesterday for the 9th Annual Del Ray Chili Cook Off on LaGrande Avenue.

Just a few of the many
Officially slated for a 4-6pm time period, the party was still going strong well past 9:00pm. And why not – there was great food, music, chairs and hay bales for relaxing and lots of neighbors for visiting.

Our judge - Alexandria Sheriff and Del Ray neighbor Dana Lawhorne

Perhaps the best apple pie I have ever tasted!

Neighbors and friends
We still don’t know the official winner but the Chili Calypso, a vegetarian offering and the Chili Cali, with toppings that included avocado and homemade tortilla strips were early favorites.
Now, on to the 14th Annual Del Ray Halloween Parade and Celebration . . .

2010 Best Decorated “Halloween House’ Contest
in
Del Ray
Here in Alexandria Halloween is a BIG DEAL. Parties, parades, cookouts, haunted houses, etc. – all in good fun and all in celebration of All Hallows Eve.
In Del Ray, our neighborhood, we kick off the festivities a little early with a Best Decorated Halloween House Contest. (There is also a Best Decorated Business contest.)

A 2009 entry
If you are planning to decorate it is not to early to start. In fact, nominees will be submitted to our judges on Oct. 18th.
After the nominees are selected, the judges (both adults and children) will spend the next week surveying the nominated houses.
Winners will be announced at the conclusion of the 14th Annual Del Ray Halloween Parade on Sunday, Oct. 24th.
Categories for the Best Decorated “Halloween House” include:
- First Timers (for first time entries),
- Best Lights,
- Kid Favorite,
- Grand Master and probably a couple more we haven’t even thought of.
There are even rumors about a Halloween Hall of Fame for those perennial over achievers.
So, there is no time to waste. Decorate to your heart’s content, you never know who is watching!
FYI, this year’s contest is being sponsored by www.GWSleptHere.com and yours truly,
Michael and Virginia

Pizzeria Del Ray Opens on Mt. Vernon Avenue in Alexandria
October 8th, 2010 Categories: Del Ray, Things to Do
Pizzeria Del Ray is now open on Mt. Vernon Avenue in Alexandria. The interior is rather stark but there is a bar and at least one TV for sports fans.

Pizzeria Del Ray on Mt. Vernon Avenue
It’s a fairly standard menu with appetizers, deep dish pizza, salads, sandwiches and four pasta choices. The beer list looks promising and the outdoor seating is always a plus.
Early reviews have not been kind but we’ll chalk it up to opening jitters. (A hint to the owners/managers – the neighborhood wants to love you.)
The good news is that’s it’s a great location (2218 Mt. Vernon Avenue) and offers something new to Del Ray. Phone number – 703.549.2999 – Pizzeria Del Ray.
